Many of the serious problems that we face today follow a similar pattern, where the effects of slow, imperceptible change go unheeded until they bring us to a point of rapid, usually irreversible, and often catastrophic, change. In this talk I discussed what we can do to predict such critical events and ameliorate their consequences – firstly by heeding the warning signs that often precede them, and secondly by building better resilience into our complex socio-economic-ecological networks.
